Too Many Requests

Client has sent too many requests in a given time period (rate limited).

What HTTP 429 means

RFC 6585. The most common production-pain status code. Response should include Retry-After header (seconds or HTTP date) and often X-RateLimit-* headers showing remaining quota and reset time. Always implement exponential backoff on 429.

Typical causes

  • Rate limit exceeded
  • Burst limit hit
  • Quota exhausted
  • Concurrent request limit exceeded
